From complex to clear: Gen Z parents are foregoing unique spellings

Gone are the days of overly complicated spellings. In 2026, we're seeing a movement towards easy-to-spell names that are both distinct and straightforward. Learn why simplicity is becoming the new trend in baby naming and why names like Emileigh are going extinct.

In the 2010s, creativity in baby naming meant one thing: unique spellings. Parents swapped out letters, added unexpected endings, and reimagined traditional names in hopes that their child would stand out. But in 2026? Not so much.

Modern parents are pulling back on heavily altered spellings (and we're here for it!). What once felt fun and different can now feel a little... complicated? Names that need to be corrected or explained over and over again can turn into a hassle, and more parents are thinking about that long term.

A perfect example is the rise and fall of the “-leigh” ending. Turning names like Mackenzie or Brynley into Mackenzeigh or Brynleigh had a moment, but now it's labeled as “cheugy” (IFYKYK). On the flip side, versions like Mackenzee or Brynlee feel more current. They’re simple, intuitive, and still have personality without the extra effort.

Who's responsible for this shift? Gen Z, of course! As they step into parenthood, they’re bringing a pretty no-nonsense mindset with them. This is a generation that takes their PTO, trusts their instincts, and does what feels right. They’re not interested in overcomplicating things, and that includes baby names. Choosing something that people can easily say and spell just fits their vibe.

At the end of the day, parents still want names that feel special and meaningful. They just also want them to work in real life.
